Admissions :: Portfolio Guidelines

The Admissions Office is more interested in the student's creative potential than his or her technical skills. Portfolios should be designed to reveal and/or highlight this creative potential. Applicants are encouraged to present a diverse body of work focusing on individual artistic strengths and interests.

The portfolio should include 8 to 10 recent works in any medium or category.

  • Original drawings, on a variety of subjects, done from observation and/or the imagination in any medium.
  • Original two-dimensional works in painting, photography, printmaking, collage and other media.
  • Writing majors can submit up to 5 writing samples such as: poems, short stories, and essays.

** Students may submit the work in any format, including slides, prints, DVDs, or CDs for Macintosh or PC.

Portfolio Showing Procedures

The Admissions Office recommends that students bring their portfolios to campus during the personal interview. When bringing the portfolio to the interview, the student may bring as much work as he or she would like but should be prepared to leave 8 to 10 pieces with the Admissions Office. If students are unable to come to campus, they must follow the procedure for Portfolio Showing by Mail.

Portfolio Showing by Mail

If a student is unable to bring the portfolio to the interview, a one-page statement briefly describing each portfolio item as numbered (title, original size, medium, objective of the project, etc.) should be included with the portfolio.

Send the work, statement and a stamped, self-addressed envelope (if you want us to return it to you) to the following address:

Chester College of New England
